Research
Excellent, perfumed Premier Cru from a strong vintage for the domaine; drink now through about 2034, sooner than your 2038 end date, and worth about $95 a bottle.
The wine
- Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru from biodynamic Domaine Chandon de Briailles, owned by the de Nicolay family since 1834.
- Made from just over 3 ha of steep, southeast-facing clay-limestone; many regard the site as Grand Cru quality.
- It is one of the domaine's two flagship wines, alongside Corton-Bressandes.
- Fermented with a high share of whole clusters (reports range from two-thirds to 100%) and aged in older barrels; 13.5% alcohol.
The vintage
- Critics judged the domaine in terrific shape in 2019, a strong year for its top wines.
- Old vines, about a third of the parcel, were picked before the hot sirocco weekend, adding vibrancy for ageing.
Tasting notes
- Critics consistently rate it excellent: perfumed and silky, with cherry, wild strawberry, violet, orange rind and forest floor.
- Vivid acidity, supple but grippy tannins and a concentrated core; some critics find the nose a little muted.
- Drinkers are split: many praise its freshness and elegance, while some find it earthy, vegetal or not very complex.
When to drink
- Approachable now, but it should improve and age gracefully over the coming years.
- Research points to drinking through about 2032–2034, earlier than your 2038 end date.
- Consider opening most of your 12 bottles by the mid-2030s rather than holding them to 2038.
Value
- Current retail for the 2019 is about $92–95 per bottle; Cask Cartel's $399 is an outlier.
- Fair value is about $95 per bottle, or roughly $1,140 for your 12 bottles.
